Tbilisi & Mtskheta Day Tour

Capital of Georgia counts 1500 years. Georgians like to count not years but centuries, looking around, everything breathes with history, but before Tbilisi was Mtskheta, former capital of Kartli Kingdom which is even older. Name of the city comes from Georgian word_თბილი(“Tbili”-warm), there is nice legend about warm sulfur waters and how King Vakhtang Gorgasali by accident discovered this miracle of nature when he was hunting, how his servants found falcon and pheasant in a boiling, hot spring. Excited king decided to move capital from Mtskheta. But it’s just nice legend. There were many pragmatic reasons to move capital from Mtskheta to Tbilisi and it seems, this place also was populated long before the official recognition.

Here, within the bath district area you will find Muslim Mosque, Armenian church, Jewish Synagogue and Georgian churches all together. While after a time multifaceted ethnic image was changed, still can say that Old Tbilisi preserves the spirit of those times.

Ancient town Mtskheta was the capital of Kartli kingdom untill status was changed by descendants of famous King Vakhtang Gorgasali. Mtskheta more than 2500 years old. By Georgians Mtskheta is treated like holly town, like second Jerusalem as the Christianity was spread from this place to other parts of Georgia. Recognition of the Christianity also covered by several interesting myths: how St. Nino Illuminator of Kartli came from Cappadocia to propagate new religion in 4th century and how miraculously was converted king Mirian to Christianity. Oldest churches and most beautiful Cathedral Svetitskhoveli are situated here. We will talk about the history of Christianity of Georgia, discuss corelation of reality and Myths and try reconstruct history from mythology.
